About App Guru
App Guru is an independent app discovery and review publication. We test popular Android apps hands-on and publish honest roundups and in-depth reviews — covering productivity, photo and video, health and fitness, finance, security, learning, and music apps.
Who App Guru is for
App Guru is written for an international, English-speaking audience — Android users everywhere who want straight answers about which apps are worth installing. Prices are shown in US dollars, recommendations assume the global versions of apps available on the Google Play Store, and our language avoids regional slang so readers from any country can follow along. Whether you're in New York, London, Toronto, or Sydney, the reviews apply to you.
Our typical reader is not a tech reviewer — they're a regular person staring at the Play Store wondering which of the forty nearly identical to-do apps actually works. We do the installing, testing, and comparing so you don't have to, and we write for people who want a clear recommendation, not a spec sheet.
What we cover
We publish two kinds of content. Roundups compare the best apps in a category side by side — the best free photo editors, the most private messaging apps, the budgeting apps actually worth paying for — so you can pick the right one for your needs in a single read. In-depth reviews go deep on a single app: what it does well, where it falls short, what the free version really includes, and who should skip it.
Our categories cover the apps people actually use every day: productivity and note-taking, photo and video editing, health and fitness tracking, personal finance and budgeting, security and privacy tools, learning and language apps, and music and audio. We focus on mainstream, widely available apps rather than obscure novelties — if millions of people are downloading it, it deserves an honest review.
How we review
Every app we cover is installed and used by our editorial team. We look at real-world usability, feature depth, pricing and free-tier limits, privacy practices, and who the app is genuinely best for. Our reviews always include the downsides we find — a review with no cons is not a review you can trust.
Testing means actually using the app for days, not minutes. We create accounts, try the free tier the way a normal user would, push into the features the marketing screenshots brag about, and read the privacy policy to see what data the app collects and shares. When an app update changes something important — a price hike, a removed feature, new ads — we revisit the review and update it.
Our ratings
When we score an app, the rating reflects the whole experience: how well it works, how fair its pricing is, how it treats your data, and how it compares to the alternatives. A beautiful app with an aggressive subscription and heavy tracking will score lower than a plain one that respects its users. Ratings are assigned by the reviewer and reviewed by an editor — they can never be bought, boosted, or negotiated, and developers see them at the same time as everyone else: when the review is published.
No APK downloads
We never host APK files or distribute modified apps. Every "Get it on Google Play" button on this site links to the app's official listing on the Google Play Store, so you always download the genuine, up-to-date version from Google.
This is a deliberate safety choice, not just a legal one. APKs from third-party sites are a classic malware vector — repackaged apps can hide spyware, and sideloaded copies never receive automatic security updates. By linking only to official Play Store listings, we make sure you get the real app, the latest version, and Google's Play Protect scanning. If an app isn't on the Play Store, we won't recommend downloading it from anywhere else.
Editorial independence
App developers do not pay for placement in our roundups, and star ratings cannot be bought. If we ever publish sponsored content in the future, it will be clearly labeled.
To be fully transparent about how this site sustains itself: App Guru is supported by advertising, not by the apps we review. That separation is what lets a review say an app's subscription is overpriced without worrying about the consequences. Our loyalty is to readers choosing apps — not to developers selling them.
How often we update
Apps change constantly — prices rise, features disappear behind paywalls, privacy policies get rewritten, and once-great apps get acquired and ruined. A review frozen in time becomes misleading, so we treat our content as living documents. Popular reviews are re-checked regularly, and reader reports of outdated information jump the queue. When a significant change happens, we update the review and note what changed.
Who runs App Guru
App Guru is run by a small editorial team of writers and testers who spend their days installing apps so you don't have to. We're the kind of people who read privacy policies for fun and have strong opinions about onboarding flows. Every review is written by someone who actually used the app, checked by an editor for fairness and accuracy, and published only when we'd be comfortable recommending it — or warning against it — to a friend.
